Will Mokoena move to Al-Ahly Amid AFCON Brilliance?

Interest in Mokoena Grows as AFCON Performances Impress

Recent external media reports have highlighted Al Ahly's interest in securing the services of Mokoena from Mamelodi Sundowns, following his outstanding performances in the AFCON tournament.

Will Mokoena move to Al-Ahly Amid AFCON Brilliance?

However, Mamelodi Sundowns' star player, Mokoena, appears reluctant to entertain the idea of joining African champions Al Ahly amid ongoing rumors.

News emerged just days ago indicating that Al Ahly had made initial contact with Mamelodi Sundowns regarding the potential transfer of Mokoena.

Mokoena's impressive displays in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have caught the attention of Al Ahly officials, who have been closely monitoring South Africa's matches, particularly focusing on winger Percy Tau.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been a key figure in South Africa's journey to the semi-finals of the AFCON, notably scoring a crucial goal against Morocco in the round of 16 and another goal against nigeria.

According to South African publication The Citizen, while Al Ahly has expressed interest in Mokoena, the player seems more inclined towards European clubs and currently has no intentions of moving to Cairo.

A source close to The Citizen revealed, "Teboho is currently focused on Bafana Bafana as the tournament is ongoing, but he is aware of the interest surrounding him. Several teams have inquired about his services, particularly after his standout performances at the AFCON."

"However, he is primarily interested in offers from leagues in England, France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Despite Al Ahly's keenness, Mokoena values his current club, Sundowns, and holds a strong affinity for them."

Negotiations are ongoing, with fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Mokoena's burgeoning career.

Meanwhile, pundits in Egypt have expressed skepticism about the potential transfer, citing Al Ahly's already well-stocked midfield lineup. One pundit remarked, "Al Ahly boasts a formidable midfield roster with players like Marwan Ateya, Amr El-Sulya, Ahmed Nabil Kouka, Aliou Dieng, Emam Ashour, Karim Nedved, and Akram Tawfik. It seems unlikely that they would pursue another midfielder, especially considering their foreign player quota is filled. Perhaps negotiations are being considered for a future transfer window, but not imminently."

In the end, the winter transfer market has ended and the registration has been closed, but could a surprise occur in the summer transfer market?
We'll see what happens
